The Worshipful Master always informs brethren of the degree in which the lodge is at labour.

If you arrive after the lodge has opened, the Tyler will inform you of the degree it is working in. Then, on entering, you should approach the altar, where the position of the Square and Compasses will again indicate the degree in which the lodge is at labour, salute the Worshipful Master and apologize for your lateness; the Worshipful Master will direct you from there.

When the meeting is in progress it is not acceptable practice to have a discussion with a brother sitting next to you, nor is it correct to rise and walk about the lodge room at your will and pleasure.

If the evening is expected to be lengthy, a Worshipful Master will usually call his lodge from labour to refreshment. When the lodge is ‘called off’, you will be allowed to walk about or leave the lodge room.

Smoking is never permitted in any lodge room.

All remarks should be made to the Worshipful Master, even if you wish to address a remark to another brother; the Worshipful Master will ask the brother directly.

Only one brother should rise and speak at one time and, if you should rise to speak when another brother also rises, one of you must sit immediately.

Only the Worshipful Master may interrupt a brother who is speaking.

Certain topics are excluded from lodge discussions, such as sectarian religion, partisan politics, race, or any subject that may be unreasonably contentious and divisive.

During any discussion there should not be undue criticism of any brother or brethren; neither should there be utterance of personalities, nor any display of bitterness or animosity.

Good-natured laughter is perfectly in order; flippant remarks are out of place.
