Joppa History – 1931

Wrigley Directories announces that Vancouver has finally become the biggest city in Western Canada. 

January 8, 1930

Mr. Jack S. Kelman was instructed in the work of the Entered Apprentice Degree.

February 12, 1930

Brother M.R. Margerison elected a member of Joppa Lodge by Affiliation. Brother A.C. Tarves was instructed in the work of the Fellow Craft Degree.

March 12, 1930

Facing the effects of the 'Depression' on the membership dues, it became obvious, the dues themselves were becoming an economic burden to some members, more than others. A committee was formed to review the membership dues and each individual situation, since the non-payment problem was worsening.

When non-payment was a consideration, it was deemed necessary to determine if a special 'lower' fee would be acceptable to each applicable member, with no obligation to accept this rebate. This special consideration was applied to some thirteen (13) individual cases.

Brother Junior Steward Kelman was instructed in the work of the Fellow Craft Degree.

April 9, 1930

Right Worshipful Brother Winslow Staples, District Deputy Grand Master, District No.2 paid an official visit to Joppa Lodge. He complimented the Lodge on their 100% standing with the Benevolent Fund.

Brother's A.C. Tarves and Junior Steward Kelman were instructed in the sublime Degree of Master Mason.
Brother L.H. Clarke a charter member of Joppa Lodge was in attendance and his generous contributions of furniture to the Lodge at its inception were recognized.

May 14, 1930

Right Worshipful Brother Winslow Staples, District Deputy Grand Master, District No.2 with other Grand Lodge Officers visited Joppa Lodge on this special occasion.

Brother Junior Steward Kelman was raised to the sublime Degree of Master Mason. Right Worshipful Brother J.J. Mahony occupied the Worshipful Master's chair to confer this Degree assisted by most of the original Officers of the Lodge, when constituted in 1925.

July 9, 1930

Grand Lodge advised of the appointment of Right Worshipful Brother Duncan MacLennon District Deputy Grand Master District No. 2 and the election of Most Worshipful Brother Henry B. Morley of Penticton B.C. as Grand Master.

September 10, 1930

Balance due on the Mortgage $1,100.00 The election of Lodge Officers as follows –
Brother W.J. Moffatt Worshipful Master, Brother W.J. Barge Senior Warden, Brother W.S. Huff Junior Warden, Worshipful Brother O.R. Merklin Treasurer, Worshipful Brother J.D. MacMillan Secretary, Brother A.K. Hancock Tyler, Worshipful Brother A.J. Smith elected Trustee for period of 3 years.

September 24, 1930

Right Worshipful Brother Duncan MacLennon, District Deputy Grand Master, District No. 2 with visiting Grand Lodge Officers were received. Installation of Officers proceeded as follows –

Brother W.J. Moffatt Worshipful Master, Brother W.J. Barge Senior Warden, Brother W.S. Huff Junior Warden, Worshipful Brother O.R. Merklin Treasurer, Worshipful Brother J.D. MacMillan Secretary, Brother J. Collyer Chaplain, Brother J.C. Cornish Director of Ceremonies, Brother A.W. Saunders Senior Deacon, Brother C.G. Bockus Junior Deacon, Worshipful Brother J.D. Beldam Installing Past Master, Brother S.C. Hoer Inner Guard, Brother C.M. Willcock Senior Steward, Brother J.W. Champion Junior Steward, Brother B.L. Hugh Organist, Brother A.K. Hancock Tyler.

Historical notes about some of newly installed Officers:

*Brother J.C. Cornish, D.O.C. this month attained fifty (50) years in the Craft. 

*Worshipful Brother O.R. Merklin, Treasurer - had attended every meeting of Joppa Lodge since the Initial Meeting April 30, 1925 

*Brother James Collyer, Chaplain - prior to Affiliation with Joppa Lodge was a member of Calcutta Lodge, which both he and Rudyard Kipling claimed as their Mother Lodge.

October 3, 1930

Historical Note - Most Worshipful Brother D.W. Sutherland, who was a visitor to Joppa Lodge on June 23, 1926 while in company with other Grand Lodge Officers, he Instituted and Consecrated Joppa Lodge and Installed the original Officers.

December 10, 1930

Joppa Lodge requested to be put on a route of the Masonic Travelling Library most suitable to the itinerary.
